Remediation

What is Mold Remediation?

Simply put --- This is the clean-up Phase

What do I need to do?

Most importantly – identify the source of the water/moisture

Home Interior Covered with Mold

  • Begin corrective action as soon as possible – fix small problems before they become large
  • Next: Ask yourself the following question – Is the project to large for me (the consumer) to clean up?
  • If the project is to large -- Have a PLAN developed by a professional restoration/remediation company
  • Determine what materials have been damaged.
The presence of “hidden” mold should also be considered

How long has it been since the damage?

24- 48 Hours

  • Guidelines are for “clean” water damage only
  • If water has been contaminated, consult an experienced professional
  • Clean and dry any material that is wet
    • Photo copy important documents – discard originals
    • Discard all non important items
    • Extract water from carpet and padding with Vacuum specifically designed for “extraction”
    • Use professional dehumidifiers and fans to remove excess humidity/moisture
    • Use fans to increase circulation
  • Clean and dry all sub floor under carpet
  • Discard any/all materials that can not be cleaned
  • Discard any damaged ceiling tiles and cellulose or fiberglass insulation
  • Have damaged window treatments laundered/cleaned
  • Pry damaged paneling away from wall to improve drying
  • Avoid contact and exposure to mold, use personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Do no touch mold with unprotected hands
    • Use protective eye wear
    • Use a minimum of an N-95 respirator (do not breath mold spores)
  • Remember: Standards and/or Threshold Limit Values (TLVs) for airborne mold spores and appropriate concentrations have not yet been established. As of 2004, there are no EPA regulations or standards for airborne mold contaminants

    Greater than 48 hours
    (Where mold growth is evident)

  • How large is the Area to clean?
    • 1. Less than 10 sq ft (considered small area)
      • Use gloves, goggles, and N95 respirators
      • Containment – None required (per EPA guidelines)
      • If in doubt – consult a Professional
    • 2. 10-100 sq ft (considered medium area)
      • Limited or Full Protection Equipment is suggested
      • Containment – Limited (per EPA guidelines)
    • 3. Over 100 sq ft (considered large area)
      • Full Protection Equipment is required
      • Containment – Full (per EPA guidelines)
